Literary Contributions / My Country


Once there were black men
Never on the run.
Once there were gunyahs
Parched by the sun.
Once there were blue streams
With white gums high above.
Once they were part of
This country that I love.
Now there are white men
Always on the go.
Now there are dams
To stop the rivers' flow.
Now there are houses
Like ill-fitting gloves.
Now they are part of
This country that I love.
