In caves of silver ice there stepped
A snowy youth, all crystal eyed
And perfect. Nearby there slept
Another, tightly wrapped in wide
And gauzy mists, untouched by shadow grey.
Ever more to live in twilight
Never more to see the dawning.
Dread, the infinite in silence
Spent in everlasting mourning.
Puny, self-deceiving mortals
Seek to conquer mountains' height
Death to them, and through the portal
Of eternal cruel . . . white
Touched cavern, lost to earth go they.
Deepest silence, deathly. deathly
Ice like frozen starlight glitter;
All inhuman, all unearthly
Beautiful.... but beauty bitter.
