Kunama 1961

Verse / Discovery

Bold mariners tore off the veil that bid your face.
Here was a new world, so here a new race -
There was beauty in your innocence,
Yet the sky hovering over head seemed to wait
For your disgrace.

Dark factories billow smoke from city chimneys overhead
Illawarra gasps, Warragamba sighs
Dirt here, buildings there
Where in the once-bush Pan plays
For your disgrace.

One day when on his pipe he'll play
A note of farewell for your ravagers
Then the holdings of this cruel race
Will leave at last your dwelling place.
