Scholarships and Prizes


Pupils of Monaro High compete, at the annual examinations each year, for a number of prizes and scholarships. Apart from prizes awarded for 1st in each class, the following Major Prizes are awarded:

The J. B. S. Barwood prize
The J. P. Beavan prize
The Monaro High School Scholarships


The J. B. S. Barwood prize

This prize awarded annually by Mr and Mrs. J. B. S. Barwood is for the boy who shows himself most outstanding in scholarship, citizenship and sportsmanship. Since its inception in 1957 it has been won by:

1958 / David Andean
1959 / Mark Kennedy
1960 / Noel Arrold


The J. P. Beavan prize

This prize awarded annually by Mr. J. P. Beavan is for the girl who shows herself most outstanding in scholarship, citizenship and sportsmanship. It has been won by the following students:

1958 / Julie Malcolm
1959 / Jennifer Brownlee
1960 / Diane Hotchkis


The Monaro High School Scholarships

These scholarships are provided from money raised by the Cooma Youth Welfare Association. The Scholarships are for £50 per annum. In general the Rules provide that the Scholarships will be awarded to pupils entering their 4th year, but this condition may be altered. In determining the awards, the Committee considers school work, attendance and attitude of the candidate; and the financial position of the candidate's parents. If no student meets the conditions in any year, no award is made. If the holder of a scholarship does not attend satisfactorily or show adequate progress, the award may be withdrawn.
